Wednesday Word: Crossworlds at a Crossroads

1/31/2018

Ugh, sorry, that's a terrible title. Ironic, right? My other thoughts were "The New Direction for Crossworlds" and something to do with dreams... Anyway...

Things in the Crossworlds series are about to take a pretty dramatic turn. The Mansion's Twins, The Mansion's Family, and Stories of the Early Days are books one, two, and three of the "At the Crossworlds" series. Now, a new (but connected) series begins.

Welcome to The Crossworlds Union.

While "At the Crossworlds" jumps, well, across worlds, it mostly takes place beyond the shadow cave, in the magical world of the mansion. What's been going on in our own world during that time? Anything?

People have often asked me, "Hey Libby, why don't you use your real name for your books?" The answer is just a wee bit complicated. Rose M. Channing isn't just a pen name, she's also a fictional character. I'm writing her story, and she's writing The Mansion's Twins.

If you've read "Dawn's Acapella" or "Acapella Angels," you've already been introduced to Rose, who resides in this world, and is just minding her own business (or so she thinks) going to high school, hanging out with friends, and working on her books. Then, strange and terrible things start to happen, and she can only wonder why on earth anyone would want to hurt her or her friends.

Rose is a quirky girl, and proud of her strangeness. She loves to daydream, imagine the impossible, and play about in fictional worlds. But the truth is bigger and more bizarre than anything even she could have imagined.

She doesn't know the world of her books is real, along with everyone in it. Ellie, Savannah, and all the residents of the mansion are real people living real lives. They've noticed what Rose is writing, and they have questions. Does Rose somehow have visions of their world, and records them? Or does Rose actually have the power to control them?

It's not just the mansion's people who have noticed Rose's power, Jerome's people seem to have noticed as well. Assuming that Rose is the kind of girl who would write happy endings for "the good guys," Jerome's people may have sinister plans for her.

Despite Rose's apparent inclination to write happy endings overall, her heroes still face a great deal of darkness in their world. With the battle against Jerome's people brewing, June is concerned about the sacrifices her own people will have to make for victory if all of Rose's words come true. She needs to know what Rose is planning, and most importantly, if Rose's plans can be changed.

To do this, June sends some of her people to Rose's world, to watch over her, and discover her plans.

I'm so excited to finally be writing this book, and really putting the "crossworlds" in Crossworlds. I don't have a formal synopsis yet, or a cover, but I couldn't wait to introduce this, however informally. We're friends, right? Come here and let me tell you some secrets:

  • "Sent From a Dream" takes place in between "The Mansion's Twins" and "The Mansion's Family."
  • Forget everything you think you know about Crossworlds, because events may be suject to change.
  • While Jerome is concerned about Rose, it's his semi-loyal follower, Helen, who is most interested in her.
  • All June's people (and Jerome's) know is that Rose is writing a story about their lives. They don't know what she's planning next, only that she's been accurate at describing events so far.
  • June sends Ellie, Savannah, Eva, Jordan, and Aaron to Rose's world, to befriend her, protect her, and discover her abilities. Others from the magical world might show up too.

I'm super excited and very ready to get this book going. Hopefully it'll be released sometime within the year. Maybe on my 29th birthday, at the latest (haha, I say that now). So enjoy Crossworlds as it is for the short time it will remain that way, and happy Wednesday!

Tuesday Tips: The Title of Your Book

1/30/2018

Book titles should be memorable, catchy, and sum up the spirit of the book. If you don’t know what to title your book, think about:

The main character’s name/what they’re all about (profession, gift, standout personality trait). “The Mansion’s Twins” was simply called “Ellie and Savannah” in my head until I based the title off of their title. Does your main character have a title?

Significant objects. My favorite books are Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.

Significant place/event: The Golden Compass is also known as Northern Lights.

Special meaningful phrase: Sometimes you don’t quite know what a title means until you get into the story. Just make sure it’s still memorable before readers comprehend the full meaning.

Series Titles: I always knew I’d use “The Mansion’s Family” as a title for something, but I didn’t know if that was the first book, the series as a whole, or something else. Be patient, think things through, and let one idea inspire others. You want your series titles to have some flow to them. Like, “Harry Potter and the fill-in-the-blank.” The Mansion’s Twins is followed by The Mansion’s Family. Dawn’s Acapella is followed by Acapella Angels, and sometime after Sent from a Dream, there will have to be Sent from a Nightmare.

Also consider how easy it is to say out loud. You want people talking about it. "Have you read *insert your title name here*?"

Check your title in Google and Amazon before you fall 100% in love with it. You don’t want something that’s been done before, something that sounds like another popular book. A few similar results might be okay, just make sure you do your research and try to have a title that’s as unique as possible. Otherwise, your book will get lost among similar titles.

Monday Music: Stories of the Early Days Playlist

Stories of the Early Days was released just yesterday! (Also, I turned 28 just yesterday, happy birthday to me!) So, here's the full playlist for Early Days. Click the links to here to songs!

Of Monsters And Men - Empire
*Opening credits if Early Days was a movie*

Hilary Duff - Come Clean
Super old school, first song ever referenced to Early Days in my brain.

Zedd - Clarity
It's not my fault this title is way too on the nose, it sums up how Claire's feelings perfectly.

Mirah - The Garden
Lidia's song.

Guns N' Roses - November Rain
Again, this shit is not my fault. I didn't pick based on the title, the song just works, okay?

Dido - Don't Leave Home
Another good one for Claire and November.

Katy Perry - Dark Horse ft Juicy J
A song for Claire in "The Mansion's Queen."

Of Monsters And Men - Little Talks
The best song to sum up Early Days and Claire's relationship with November. When I heard this song for the first time, my first thought was "this song sounds like a party!" and my second thought was, "Wow, this was written for Early Days!"

And so the Illusions carry on
Never here
But never gone

What is the dreamer’s curse? Where did it come from, and how could anyone escape from it? Forest-born November sets out to find the answers, and comes upon a lost mother and child who are far more than they seem.

He promises to help them, and return them home, but soon he’s swept away in something he can’t escape.

A story of love, power, and madness, “The Mansion’s Queen” concludes these short tales of the developing world.

Sneak Peak:

June and November discuss Claire's condition in Talya's (November's baby daughter) room:
“Since you left for the center of magic, she’s… She’s not been well.”
     “How so?”
November hesitated. He’d thought over and over the things he could say to her, and yet now that they were face to face, he wasn’t quite sure how to explain what Claire was doing. “She’s gone mad with grief and power. She watches her people too closely, afraid they’ll turn on her. Even just speaking against her is punishable by death.”
June frowned, and nodded. November was surprised at her lack of shock. “I… I did suspect it,” she whispered. “Claire is guarding herself as well, but her magic isn’t as strong due to her lack of focus. I thought I saw a flicker of something wrong, but I was too distracted to linger on it…”
     “I’m sorry, June.”
“It’s no fault of yours,” she said quickly. “Are you alright, November? Has she hurt you?”
“No,” he said, before he could stop himself. June raised her eyebrows in disbelief. November sighed. “I don’t think she would hurt me intentionally, but she… She won’t let me leave. I can’t go home again, I can hardly leave the mansion. I would have walked away from her, but…” He gestured to Talya, asleep in her cradle. “I couldn’t leave while she was pregnant. Now I can’t bring myself to take my daughter and run. Claire would get even worse. And the mansion’s people have come to depend on me. If I’m not duplicating crystals, I’m showing someone else how to, or tending to one who needs my gift.”
     “And you love Claire.”
November heard it as a question at first, but quickly realized that June simply knew, and there was no point in trying to deny it. “I have to fix this, June. I have to help her. If I run, it’ll just be worse for everyone.”
“You should leave this to me. With my mind cleared again, I’m noticing so much I didn’t before, but even if I was still cursed, I think I’d be able to see how you suffer. Go home to your forest. Fix yourself, and leave the mansion to me. I belong here, and you belong in the North. This mess isn’t yours to clean up.”
“I… I am grateful for the offer, but… I couldn’t live with myself knowing I’d left all of this on you. I couldn’t just sit and wonder what became of you all.”
“November… Is that because you care for me and the mansion’s people, or because you love Claire?”
“Both?” He sighed. “I can’t run. Never mind the reason, I just can’t run.”
“Then you can help me find a way to fix this. When did Claire start acting like this? Soon after I left?”
     “Yes.”
“And what about when she was pregnant with Talya? How was she then?”
“Happier. Hopeful. It didn’t lift away the madness entirely, but it seemed to help.”
“She needs her children,” June said. “She has others, doesn’t she? I’ve never even met them. I don’t know their names.”
“She has twins,” November said. “One’s queen of the South, the other’s king of the North. Aislinn and Arawn. I don’t know if they could help us.”
“Twins?” June said. “I didn’t know that was even possible.”
“I know. But they’re real, and they’ll come back for Claire.”
“I’ll summon them,” June said. “It might take a while for them to reach us, but they can at least send more help our way. We need people with us who aren’t afraid of what Claire can do. If they both have their own kingdoms, Aislinn and Arawn should be the perfect people to bring to the mansion. They can help Claire set up a fair system. Perhaps having more of her family brought back to her will help her cope with her grief. If they can’t come, maybe I can do enough for her on my own. We’ll see. Once I better understand her condition, I might have a better idea of what to do.”
“Thank you June,” November said. “I… I should return to her now. She’ll know something’s up if I’m gone to long.”
“You won’t have to live like this much longer, November.”

Tuesday Tips: When Should You Publish?

1/23/2018

I don't mean "When am I ready to publish?" I mean, is there an optimum time of year to publish?

I used to publish my books on June 21st, because that's Ellie and Savannah's birthday. I thought, how cool would it be if the book "The Mansion's Twins" was "born" on the same day as the characters the mansion's twins? But, my author support group advises against publishing in the summer months. They say it's not the best time of year, however, other articles online have said differently. As always with anything related to writing, there's a good deal of conflicting advice out there. You'll want to research the best times for your specific genre.

Others advise publishing around the holidays, but this may only benefit traditionally published books. People buy books for gifts, and in their mind, it's a safer bet to go with an established author rather than take a chance on someone self-published. But it may be beneficial to have your books recently published on Amazon while these holiday shoppers are browsing. The more eyes you can get on your book, the better. But if you don't want to risk being lost in the flood of new holiday books, try publishing in winter, but after the holidays. People are still shut indoors and looking for something to read.

Again, there's lots of conflicting advice out there. So, to sum up what I've personally learned:
  • Focus on making sure your book is ready for publication above worrying about the best time of year to release it. If it's not ready, it won't do well no matter when it's released.
  • It's a bonus if you can sync up your publishing date with something important in your story.
  • Release your book during a month appropriate for it's genre, for example, horror and paranormal books in October, and romance books in February.
  • Research the best dates for your particular genre.
  • If no specific genre or significant event in the story has your book corresponding with a particular month, you might want to release it sometimes at the beginning of the year, during the winter months, but after the holidays.
  • You can also just do what I'm doing for "Stories of the Early Days," and release your book on your birthday. That way you can get people to buy your book on your birthday!

Out of all the songs I have describing Claire and November's relationship, this was does the best job of it. By next week's Monday Music, Stories of the Early Days will be released!

Preview!

“Have you been able to sleep?” November asked.
“Sleep is death,” Claire whispered. “It’s the curse, the nightmares, and I face it all alone. I want you in my dreams, I want June, but you never come.”
“I can make you a potion if you like,” he said.
“It won’t help,” she whispered. “Potions can’t take away fear, can they?”
“It would give you dreamless sleep. If it’s the dreams you fear, then yes, it can.”
“I fear never waking.” She sighed, and leaned toward him, until her head rested on his shoulder. “I fear for June, I fear…” Her voice lowered to a whisper. “You’re leaving so soon…”
“I’ll come and see you as often as I can. I want to see June once her curse is broken.”
“For June!” Claire exclaimed, sitting up again. “What of me? I still need you. Did you forget the promise you made to me? Once June is gone, I’ll need you even more. Perhaps you could stay until she returns.” Her face lit up as she spoke the last sentence. “I don’t want to be alone here—this house is haunted with memories I should have forgotten—they are half forgotten, and I don’t even know what is real! Can you look into my mind? You could tell, me, right? You connect with my thoughts, don’t you? Don’t you know how to see deeper? Is it all that different?”
“I’m sorry Claire, I can’t look into your mind that deeply. Not even someone with vision can do that. No one could find memories and know that they’re real anymore than you can. You can tell me the memories you have, and we can work from there.”
“Dimitri,” she whispered, her eyes filling with tears. “He won’t leave my memories, won’t leave my dreams… I loved him, and I betrayed him... I just want to see him alive. I want to remember him—really remember, and know more than the nightmare… I only see his face in June, and now she’s leaving me…”
“When she returns, you’ll have even more of him back,” November said. “June isn’t herself right now. She’s lost. The center of magic will bring her back to us. You have to be patient.”
     “I can’t without you!”
     “I have faith in you.”
“Faith?” She paused for a long moment. Then, “Do you know how this house welcomes you, November? Even though it isn’t your true home?”
“Yes,” he said slowly. He still felt the occasional swells of joy when he walked through the halls, as though the house knew he saved Claire’s life, knew of his greatness as a healer. Greatness! He almost laughed at the thought. The mansion welcomes me so much it’s making me arrogant!
“You cannot know how it feels without that. I hear the whispers. Some people don’t love me as their queen. They are few, but they’re the ones who remember. They know more than I do of my past, and I hate them for it. But even though the majority of my people admire me, I feel the doubt and contempt in every room. The mansion still speaks to me, and it has lost faith. I made this place! It holds my magic! Now it’s turned on me. Faithless. I hate it.”
“You can get that back. You’re already planning to set everything right.”
“I can’t do it without the belief that I can, but I can’t know someone believes in me until I do it? That’s cruel. If you still have faith, please, stay just a little while longer. If this house welcomes you, it can’t be that terrible, right?”
“I suppose,” he said, too nervous to answer another way. “I’ll stay a while longer. But I’m not the only one who still has faith in you. Remember that.”

Wednesday Word: Happiness vs. Success

1/17/2018

Picture
So, in yesterdays blog, I mentioned how the “get up earlier!” posts are all focused on success, and not at all on health. Last week, I listened to a podcast that really got me thinking about the ideas of happiness vs success.

We all want people to remember our name. Lots of people say “I want to leave my mark on this world.” Ever heard the quote “the marks we leave are too often scars”? Those are the people it’s directed to. (Okay, I just looked up that quote and apparently it's from The Fault in our Stars by John Green, but I swear I've known this quote since I was like, five. I'm super confused now. Hasn't this always just been a quote? Anyway...)

Jenna and Julien talked about how people can lose their morals in trying to accomplish more, be bigger, go further, and forget simple rules like “do no harm.” It’s fine to want success, but be a human first.

Here's a link to the podcast: Podcast #169 - Logan Paul. Sure, it's about the whole Logan Paul thing, but what Jenna wants to tell him is just important for life in general.

It's deeply ingrained in us that success and happiness are tied together, and once you're successful, you'll be happy. When really, that should be flipped. You're succeeding at life in general once you've figured out how to be happy. It's easy for someone to focus 100% of themselves on working to be successful, they ignore other important aspects of life. We all need balance in our lives.

I’ve always thought you shouldn't destroy yourself in the pursuit of success, but I meant “don’t destroy your health.” Maybe you accomplish a ton, receive lots of awards, and get rich. But does that really matter if your sick and/or miserable? I never really thought about the moral side of it until hearing what Jenna had to say. She's  right. There's more than one way to destroy yourself. You can work yourself to death, or sell your soul, and neither are worth it for "success."

I’ve never understood people who will sacrifice everything for work. And I don’t mean give up sleep. I mean relationships, friends, family, and the joy of life in general. What are you really working for? What’s your life all about if you’re only focused on “success”?

I think everyone at one point or another has said they want to be a millionaire, whether they really gave it a great deal of thought or not. And there's nothing wrong with that. But I think we should consider what we're getting out of our money. What are you spending your money on, and what do you get out of those purchases/experiences? Do they give you comfort? Fun? Status? Are you learning? Are you making memories? If your main goal is money, you can consider these questions to find out what you're really after to be happy. Money is just a means to an end, after all.

Of course we all want the satisfaction of accomplishment, and of course we all want enough money to be stable and comfortable. I mean, look at me. I want to be a famous author, and I’m not going to deny that. There’s nothing wrong with the drive for success. It’s deeply engrained in our culture. We just have to think about what we really want in the end, remember to have balance in our lives, and never let our drive for success overrun our humanity. We should make sure that if we leave any mark on this world, it will be a positive one.

Tuesday Tips: Wake Up and Get Excited!

1/16/2018

Okay, I did say my Tuesday tips would be a little silly this year. So, here’s my tips on how to become a morning person.

We’ve all read articles with similar tips: go to bed and wake up at the same time every night/morning (who can physically do that? Who even wants to? Sounds awful), lists of things to do before bed (avoid screens, limit caffeine, read), and things to do in the morning (because having a to-do list first thing in the morning really helps people jump out of bed). On this to-do list are usually things like: take some time to meditate, exercise, shower, eat breakfast, and get something slightly unpleasant done and off your days to-do list early on.

I’ve seen so many lists with these tips, and all of them encourage earlier and earlier rising, because being a morning person will help you be “successful.” Plus, you need the extra time to get done everything they think you should do when you first wake up, because that’s what “successful” people do. The thing that irks me about all of these lists is that none of them mention anything to to with being healthy. Get up earlier, they say, just get up earlier and get going on your day. But none of them say anything about going to bed earlier, because apparently getting a full night of sleep isn’t important if you want to be “successful,” and you shouldn’t worry about taking care of yourself. It’s, well, it's total crap. So, here’s my list of tips for how to wake up happy at whatever hour you have to.
  1. If your need to wake up early, think about how to get sleepy early the night before. Go to bed at an appropriate hour for your sleeping needs. I work six am shifts sometimes, so I like to be in bed at nine, which means getting ready at eight. Mellow out with a book, or some ASMR/meditation, a nice hot shower, or some other pleasant activity. I love adult coloring books, they chill me out nicely. It’s not easy to go to bed early, but if you have to do it several nights in a row, it gets easier. There is some credibility to the whole “same time every night/morning” rule, it’s just not that realistic. We all deserve to sleep in on our days off.
  2. Put a good thought in your head when you wake. I know, when we hear the alarm go off, our first thought in the morning is usually a variation of “NOOOOO!” with a few expletives thrown in. But after that. Take a few deep breathes. Think of something your excited about. Don’t think about your do to list yet. Remind yourself of whatever you need to be reminded of: You’re doing your best and that’s enough, be gentle with yourself, etc…
  3. Breakfast! Have something yummy to be excited about. It’s always awesome to get out of bed and think about good food.
  4. Wait until after breakfast to think about whatever else you need to do.
  5. Listen to something nice while you get ready for your day. Music, your favorite podcast, an audiobook, etc. Having something nice in the background somehow makes it easier to get moving.
  6. Remember everyone is different. Maybe you’ve been struggling with following these lists because you’re an afternoon or evening person. There’s no reason you can’t be successful just because you function better at a later time of day. Figure out when your body and mind are at their sharpest, and prioritize and maximize that time.
  7. Now, this post is about over, so get off the internet and get some writing done. I know you came here for writing advice. You thought that's what today's "Tuesday Tips" would be about. Then you thought, "hey, she changed things on her blog! She forgot I'm supposed to be writing right now!" I didn't forget, I just zoned out for a sec. Let's both get back to work, shall we?

I've enjoyed this song when they played it where I work. Then I realized this could be added to my Early Days playlist--another one for Claire and November.

"Do you love me, Claire?"
"That's a foolish question."
"Why? Because you do, or because you don't?"
"I need you!"
"Need isn't love."

Picture
It all began with dreams…

Clare, Dimitri, and Lidia were all nothing but distant legends to Ellie and Savannah. Now, their full story is revealed.

Witness “The Beginning,” when the world was nothing more than dreams. See the mansion in its earliest stages, and watch the Garden of Evil take shape. Discover Claire’s secrets, her friendship with Lidia, her romance with Dimitri, and what led her to betray him. Most importantly, discover the secrets behind her disappearance…

All the briefly-told stories from “The Mansion's Twins” are now revealed in full. All the mysteries and questions left from “The Mansion's Family” are finally answered. But beware. Those were dark times. After all, if you entered an empty world, and knew part of it could be yours, how far would you go to claim it?

Sneak peak:

“There’s new light in your eyes, Claire,” Lidia said, as they took seats around the table at the start of a group meeting.

The light from the center of magic was still alive inside her, but the profound sense of clarity and purpose was instantly muddled when she returned to the Garden. She was sure she had a plan the last time she left the mansion. A plan to say goodbye, to cut ties with Lidia forever, block them all off and walk away…
Things could never be so simple.
     “What?” Claire said.
     “You thought I wouldn’t notice?”
Claire was about to speak, but both she and Lidia fell silent as the others gathered around.
Lidia took a deep breath, and smiled at everyone around the table. “We’ve been waiting a long time for this,” she began. “We’ve all been preparing for this, though you might not have known it. But now, we’re ready. We should take a journey to the other side of the forest. Claire? I think you know the place I’m talking about.”
“Do I?” Claire said. Lidia’s words made her terribly uncomfortable. The day had finally come when Lidia wanted to go after the mansion. Claire hoped she could keep them distracted for at least long enough to warn Dimitri. She couldn’t let them near the mansion, not while he was living there. But they could still find it, whether or not she said anything.
“You know where I want to go, Claire,” Lidia said. “Will you take us there?”
Claire hesitated for a long moment. “The magic is well-guarded,” she said. “I don’t know how I’d be of help to you.”
“I understand it’s guarded,” Lidia said. “That’s why we haven’t attempted this sooner. But we’re ready now, Claire! Especially with you leading us. I know you’ve been there. We can do this.”
“The guards are stronger than we know,” Claire said. “Anyway, don’t we have enough magic already?”
“Enough?” Lidia laughed. “Are you immortal yet, Claire?” She offered her hand. “Come with me. Let’s talk outside.”
Claire sighed, and followed reluctantly. Together they stood on the front porch, and she waited for Lidia to speak.
“What has he been telling you?” Lidia said.
     “What? Who?”
“Dimitri, of course. I heard all the strange questions your little twins asked, wondering why we even wanted immortality in the first place. Who wouldn’t? Aren’t I right, Claire? Don’t you still want everything we dreamed about?”
“I…” She paused. Lidia could see right through a lie. “I do, but…”
     “But what?”
“If we go to the mansion, we can’t hurt anyone who lives there. It’s the center of the world’s magic, we don’t have the right—”
“The right? Don’t you think we’ve earned the right? I see what he’s doing to you. You think you love him, don’t you? But would you hold on to that for nothing in return? No one’s going to remember your name if you stay with him. He’s holding you back! I’m not asking you to hurt him—I’m not asking you to hurt anyone, all I want is to get inside the mansion. Why haven’t you even taken me there?”
     “Lidia, I—I’m sorry.”
“You promised me no more secrets.”
“I didn’t want to put my twins in danger, I—”
“I know, Claire, I know. But now they’re gone. You’ve been to the center of magic, you can lead us there too!”
“I didn’t go alone,” Claire said. “I don’t know the way, not by myself.”
“Then we’ll find a way. But first, just between us… What was it like?”
     “I… I don’t have words for it…”
“You don’t have to. I can see it in your eyes. Don’t you want that feeling back? What if you could have it all the time?”
Claire was silent. She couldn’t deny she wanted what Lidia described, but that didn’t matter. Dimitri was worth more. Wasn’t he?
