From special guest author, Harvey Jones! When I need to focus on passion, I listen to Meat Loaf - Paradise By The Dashboard Lights. I turn it up and sing it loud. Other music that help me to connect with emotions is Dido - No Angel. Books by Harvey Jones**Please note these are erotic books with adult content** Harvey Jones is the pen name of Jan Harvey and Sian Jones. Both of us were born in Wales and live in Barry. Jan is an experienced and well-respected professional carer and has two grown up children, and Sian is an English teacher and a single mother to her grown up son. We like nothing better than taking in the natural beauty of the Welsh countryside and visiting the local beaches with Jan's German Shepherd, Connie. Indeed, Wales has inspired our writing and serves as the setting for our novel, Hook Up, and its upcoming sequel, Legacies. As mature women with a lot of life experience, we relished the opportunity to explore something different and enter the world of writing novels. A local paper has referred to us as a 'Welsh writing duo' and we like to think of ourselves as this!
I've always been rather picky about "inspirational quotes." Before deciding to publish, I thought I hated all of them. Mainly because the world tells us things and then does the opposite. "Go for your dreams!" we hear. And then... "What are you doing with your life?" "Be yourself," we hear. And then... "But not like that." But once I decided to publish, all I wanted to do was listen to those positive thoughts. I found quotes I actually like. And some I really hate. Some have to do with writing, some just random life stuff. Also, a more appropriate title would be "My favorite and least favorite quotes," but that's awfully long, "best and worst" will have to do. I'll also write the quote below the image, in case the images won't load. Best: Albert Einstein: If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. Love it. Also love "everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish based on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it's stupid." Worst: "Stop dreaming, start doing." And: "There comes a point in your life when you need to stop reading other people's books and write your own." --Albert Einstein I agree with half of these. The "start doing" part. The "write your own" part. But why should I stop dreaming? Dreaming shouldn't be cast aside as laziness. It's necessary. If you forget why you started, you'll have no reason to continue. Always keep dreaming. The "reading other people's books" part confused me because I took it too literally at first. Then it made me rage. But, taken as more of a metaphor for comparing yourself to other people, it makes more sense. Still, I don't like how it's phrased. I can't believe, in whatever context, that the words "stop reading" ever came out of Einstein's mouth. So whatever it means, this quote just makes me feel weird. Best: Tom Clancy: The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense. All I have to say to this is HELL YES, and I'll be writing in more depth about it in later posts. In fiction, everything has meaning. If you catch a guy staring at you, he's probably your future love interest. In real life, he might have just been spacing out in your direction, and you'll probably never even speak to him. The absolute worst: "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." So lets all get out there and hurt ourselves! But seriously... Sure, hard times make us tough. Or mess us up. But however you feel about the meaning of this quote, it's overused. It's so overused I feel bad for even listing it. We've all seen millions of discussions and variations on this. Everything from "what doesn't kill you changes you," to, "leaves you with crippling mental illness" to, "pisses you off." Can we please. Just. STOP. Best:
"No two persons ever read the same book." --Edmund Wilson Ever argued with someone about a book you both read? It's impossible to reach an agreement because of all the different ways to interpret stories. This is also why we hated the English class where the teacher insisted this is what the author meant, and this one thing is right. There's no one right answer. That's part of the magic of books. Also, this is a great message to remember when you receive negative feedback. On that note, go read some good books, and have a great week! See you Monday! |
